The theory of bivariate real valued orthogonal polynomials constructed using the lexicographical or reverse
lexicographical orderings has a close connection with matrix orthogonal polynomials. We will review
this connection and show how the theory of matrix orthogonal polynomials sheds light on the theory of
multivariate orthogonal polynomials.
